String of robberies in La Grange and Brookfield likely connected, police say
LA GRANGE – Two men might have used a weapon while robbing a woman near Cossitt and Bluff Avenues late Friday night, police said.
The woman was walking alone and listening to music when she felt something hard pressed to the back of her neck. One of the men said, "What do you have?"
The woman did not know what was pressed against her neck, though she said it could have been a gun or other weapon. One of the men approached her from the front and the other from the back, she said. The men fled after taking her backpack and MP3 player.
The robbery could be related to two other incidents that occurred last week in Brookfield and La Grange, police said.
At 2:50 a.m. last Wednesday, three men were robbed by gunpoint in the 4200 block of Maple Avenue in Brookfield. The victims were approached by three other men on bicycles, one of whom hit one of the victims in the face with a chrome semiautomatic handgun. The three suspects punched the three men and stole their cell phones and a backpack with clothing.
Police indicated that the same suspects were likely involved in an incident Saturday night in La Grange, when two men who know each other got into a fight near the Community Center, 200 S. Washington Ave. A cell phone was stolen in the fight, which drew friends of both men from nearby areas. No weapons were used in the fight, police said.
"These things don't happen that often, and to have three within a five-day period, all within eight to ten blocks from each other … There's a good chance they're all connected," Brookfield Police Lieutenant Edward Petrak said.
