Countryside amends assault weapons ban to match Cook County's
COUNTRYSIDE – The City Council unanimously approved an ordinance that matches the city’s assault weapons ban with the existing one for Cook County.
The ordinance, approved at the council's July 10 meeting, is mostly symbolic because the county ban precedes the city’s. But the fact that the city has its own ban gives it the right to amend it in the future. Presumably, Countryside could make its ban stricter than the county ban by adding weapons or harsher penalties.
Cook County’s ordinance bans 70 categories of assault rifles, nine types of pistols and four variations of shotguns. It also includes a minimum fine of $500 and a maximum of $1,000 for each violation.
