Clarendon Hills to consider assault weapons ban

CLARENDON HILLS – The Clarendon Hills Village Board on Monday will consider an ordinance limiting the possession of assault weapons after the passage of concealed carry legislation by the General Assembly.

A provision of the new law prevents local governments from adopting local regulations on assault weapons except for within 10 days of the law’s passing, which is July 19.

The Village Board will consider an ordinance that makes it illegal to possess certain assault weapons, generally defined as guns with higher capacity and advanced features.

The Village Board had not previously considered banning assault weapons. However, given the limited window offered to local governments to decide local policy on this issue, the next meeting will be the board’s only opportunity to decide whether certain assault weapons should be permitted in the village.

If the ordinance is approved and enacted by the board, the ban itself would not begin until July 1, 2014. The delayed effective date would allow the village to have a broader community conversation during the next year about whether the community wants to ban these types of weapons, and if so, to allow the Clarendon Hills Police Department to develop enforcement policies prior to the July 1, 2014 enforcement date.
