Chicago Red Stars notch second consecutive shutout victory
After topping Washington, Red Stars return home for two-game homestand
BOYDS, Maryland - The Chicago Red Stars couldn't convert on an early penalty kick in Wednesday's game against the host Washington Spirit.
They didn't need to.
The Red Stars scored two goals eight minutes apart in the second half to earn a 2-0 win, their third in their last five games.
Inka Grings couldn't capitalize on the PK in the eighth minute of the game, but the Chicago (5-6-3) defense held strong and the game was scoreless at the half.
In the 63rd minute, Adriana Leon dribbled herself into space and lobbed a shot into the back of the goal to break the scoreless tie. Before the Spirit could regroup, Leon set up Ella Masar for an insurance goal in the 71st minute.
Keeper Erin McLeod made five saves to earn her second consecutive shutout win.
The Red Stars return to Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex for a two-game home stand that begins with Sunday's 3 p.m. game against FC Kansas City. They then host the Spirit at 6 p.m. July 20 in Lisle. Visit the Red Stars website for more information or to purchase tickets.
