Westmont paramedics help deliver newborn en route to Hinsdale hospital
WESTMONT – In a race to Adventist Hinsdale Hospital's emergency room, two Westmont paramedics were surprised by a newborn's early arrival July 2.
The paramedics, Kathy Meier and Caleb Lalonde, said the baby girl was born at about 2:06 a.m. while the ambulance was on its way to the hospital.
"We get people in labor all the time but they always make it to the hospital and up to the ER," Meier said. "She (the mother) made the comment halfway up to Hinsdale, 'she's coming' and that was it, she delivered the baby."
Meier said in her 12 years at the Westmont Fire Department, she's only seen two deliveries. In this particular case, a medical student, who was on his last ride-along, delivered the baby.
Lynn Dralle, EMS director at the fire department, said within the next couple of months or so there will be presentation at village hall, where the medics will receive Stork pins.
