ADDISON – A Lombard man with Down syndrome won two gold medals and one silver medal at the Special Olympics Summer Games.

Ted Callahan, nicknamed the “Brahma Bull” for his strength and gentle nature, recently competed in the Special Olympics Summer Games at Illinois State University in Normal. Callahan won a gold medal in bench pressing, a silver medal in deadlifting and a gold medal in the two-event combo, combining the highest weight in bench press and deadlift. He qualified for this competition because he had won regional gold medals in the deadlift and bench press events.

Callahan has competed in this competition for more than 15 years and has won 43 medals in powerlifting: 26 of them gold, 13 silver and four bronze medals. He has also been nominated for the U.S. Olympic Powerlifting Team.

When Callahan is not competing, he spends his time at the Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association, or NEDSRA, in Addison.

“I have known Ted for more than 20 years,” said Executive Director of NEDSRA Jeena Greenwalt. “I have watched him grow up, and have witnessed first-hand the positive impact that NEDSRA programs have had on his social, physical, and emotional development.”
