BROOKFIELD – Brookfield Zoo has another new baby, and this time it's a giraffe.

Jasiri, a 7-year-old giraffe at the zoo, gave birth to a male calf June 21. The newborn weighed in at 173 pounds and 5 feet 9 inches, and was born outdoors in a non-exhibit area.

The dad is a sire named Hasani, 4, who arrived at the zoo in 2010 on a breeding loan from Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City, Kan. He is also the father of Dave, a calf born in November of last year. Other giraffes on exhibit include Mithra, 22; Franny, 21; and Arnieta, 5.

In addition to the two new giraffes, the zoo has seen several other births in recent months. Recent newborns include two sloth bear cubs born January 20; a klipspringer, born June 14; two addax antelopes born June 7 and 22.

More births are on the way: Three dolphins are also expecting babies.
