LISLE – Before the evening fireworks displays on July 4, the Chicago Red Stars gave the home fans a show with a 1-0 holiday matinee win over the Western New York Flash.
Lori Chalupny scored in the 57th minute on an Inka Grings feed to hand the Flash and star player Abby Wambach, a member of the U.S. Women's National Team, their first loss in 10 games.
“Lori (Chalupny) is a top-five player in the league," Red Stars coach Rory Dames said in a news release. "She does what she does and we are happy to have her.”
The Flash duo of Wambach and Carli Lloyd created multiple close-call opportunities toward the end of the second half, but the Red Stars defense held strong. This was the fourth victory for the Red Stars (4-6-3) this season as they look to continue their rise toward playoffs after a tough start to the season.
Chicago keeper Erin McLeod stopped the Flash's only shot on frame to earn the shutout.
The Red Stars travel to suburban Washington, D.C., to face the Washington Spirit on Wednesday before returning home to host FC Kansas City on Sunday.
