Man who sexually assaulted woman at knifepoint gets 60 year sentence
WHEATON – A man with ties to the area was sentenced July 2 to 60 years in prison for sexually assaulting a Bensenville woman in 1996, according to a news release from DuPage County State's Attorney Robert B. Berlin
Kurt J. Serzen, 55, formerly of Hanover Park, was found guilty of multiple counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault and criminal sexual assault by Judge Robert Kleeman after a four-day long bench trial in April 2011. The maximum number of years allowed by law for such chargeds is 60.
Serzen was charged after he broke into an apartment armed with a knife at approximately 2:15 a.m. Aug. 7, 1996. He woke the victim, threatened her with the knife and then sexually assaulted her and left the apartment, according to the release.
With the help of the DuPage County Sheriff's Department Crime Lab, the Bensenville Police Department and the State's Attorney's Cold Case Review Team, Serzen was charged in September 2003.
