Downers Grove Police resume 'Operation Chill' rewards program for kids

DOWNERS GROVE – School’s out for Summer, and children in Downers Grove can look forward to “cool” encounters with police, thanks to 7-Eleven stores’ Operation Chill program that rewards positive behavior with a cool treat.

Through Operation Chill, law enforcement officers can provide youngsters caught in the act of doing good with Slurpee beverage coupons. Each coupon can be redeemed for a small Slurpee drink at participating 7-Eleven stores.

Since the program’s inception in 1995, more than 12 million Operation Chill coupons have been distributed to hundreds of law enforcement agencies across the country in areas where 7-Eleven operates stores.

During 2013, approximately 600,000 coupons will be issued nationally. Hundreds will be distributed in Downers Grove, most during the summer months and back-to-school season.

“The coupons are great for officers who are on patrol in the community”, Downers Grove Police Sgt. Harry Andler said in a news release. “It’s a way to encourage dialogue in a non-threatening, non law-enforcement situation.”
