Meg Kowalski may not even be in high school yet, but she is already showing she could be one of the best tennis players in the state, and the region, for years to come.
The La Grange resident won the 14-and-under girls division at the prestigious USTA Midwest Section Closed Junior Championship held in Okemos, Mich. She won the final of the six-day tournament on June 27 by defeating top seed Elysia Bolton of Lake Forest 6-1, 6-4.
Kowalski entered the tournament as the No. 7 seed at the tournament, which draws players from five states and is only open to players that have earned enough ranking points to make the 128-player draw. Kowalski won all seven matches in straight sets and didn't need tiebreakers for any sets either.
Highlighting the other local athletes competing in the tournament was Daniel Mateescu (Westchester) taking fourth in the 14-and-under boys singles draw. Mateescu and Mark Wu of Northbrook won the doubles draw for the same age bracket.
Alex Chatt, who will be a senior at Lyons Township in the fall and placed third in state last year, went 3-2 in the girls 18-and-under division. LT junior-to-be Kristen Thoms also went 3-2 in the same draw by picking up three wins in the consolation draw after losing in the first round.
