Westmont resident Shahla Roashan has been an RN at Westmont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for more than 31 years. Shewas recently given the Hero in Long Term Care award.

WESTMONT – Hearing residents say “thank you” or “God bless you” are the things that count most to Shahla Roashan.

The Westmont resident has been a registered nurse at Westmont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for more than 31 years.

“I do it because I love people,” Roashan said. “It’s something that I’m satisfied with.”

Roashan recently was awarded for her dedication to her profession, receiving the Hero in Long Term Care award.

The annual award is presented by the Health Care Council of Illinois, Illinois Health Care Association and the Illinois Council on Long Term Care and supports the work of nursing home staff members in Illinois, including facility residents and volunteers.

Roashan said she’s pleased to be named 2013’s Hero.

“It was an honor that they picked me out of all the employees,” Roashan said. “It’s not something that a whole lot of people get.”

Having respect and compassion for those around you is something Roashan said her mother instilled in her at a young age.

She said it means a lot when the residents she has been helping begin to walk again or take a turn for the better.

“I’m always pleased and proud that I did that,” Roashan said. “I take a lot of pride in my work.”

Roashan credited a great group of leaders, administrators and owners at Westmont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

“They value me, and I value them a whole lot,” Roashan said. “If I live another 31 years, I’d be a volunteer and come to see the residents and facility.”
