Summer Reading is in full swing at the public library

So far, about 700 adults, families, teens, tweens and even babies have signed up for loads of Summer Reading fun.

If you have not signed up – it’s not too late!

You too can come join us to read, win prizes – a whopping $38,000 dollars worth of gifts and donations are fueling incentive to read – or you can just stop in to say “hi” and hang out.

Speaking of hanging out, over the years I have seen library usage patterns change. People don’t come to the library only to check out materials and seek information – they come to the library to create beauty and fulfillment in their lives. That might mean taking advantage of our free computer classes, including Introduction to PowerPoint, Computer and Internet Basics and Touch Typing for Beginners.

People even come in to read to dogs. Yes, believe it or not, every Thursday at 10 a.m. the library is full of the most adorable four-legged friends. They are extremely patient listeners.

Folks also come out to be carried away by beautiful music. You can join us July 27 at noon to listen to music from Chicago’s Civic and Lira Chamber Orchestras.

Of course, we also have our usual roster of events: Story time, Book Discussion Group, Zumba, Photography Group, ESL Conversation Café, Art Club, Gaming Day, Stamping with Sandy and movies, too.

Please visit our website at and click on “Calendar of Events” for information. You also can give us a call at 708-749-1050.

There always is a lot going on at the Stickney-Forest View Public Library District, and we invite you to come in to our library to create your own beauty.

You can also show your support for our library and our efforts to serve this community by attending Music in the Park on July 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. where The Stickney-Forest View Friends of the Library also will serve dinner.

See you soon!

Heather Shlah is the director of the Stickney-Forest View Public Library District
