If you want chickens, buy a farm

To the editor:

There has been a lot of activity in La grange recently about chickens. I travel to different cities in other states and have seen the effects of chickens being kept in urban settings. I immediately called village officials and questioned what laws La grange had in place to prohibit this practice.  My fears were calmed when they assured me that there was an ordinance that expressly prohibited animals like chickens, goats, mules, cows and other similar animals from being raised in village limits.

Now someone who broke that law doesn't like it and wants to change it. That's the American way. Rally enough people who are of the same opinion and try to convince others and village officials that something should change. To make your case though don't compare farm animals to dogs.  Don't talk about what other towns or villages do. Don't quote statistics or make false statements.

There are a few problems that come to mind quickly if this ordinance ever changes. Enforcement by police already overburdened with legitimate complaints. And, how about trying to sell your $500,000-plus house next door to the neighbor that has a chicken coop in the backyard?

We have chosen to live in an urban environment and I choose La grange because of all the positives like good schools for my children, great police and fire department services, efficiently run government and a vibrant downtown business community.

If you want to raise chickens buy a farm!
