Letter: More than meets the eye with Lions Club scholarships

To the Editor,

The June 12 issue of the Lisle Reporter carried an article about Lisle Lions Club awarding two $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors. This is true, but there is quite a bit more to the story.

Eligible winners must live in the 60532 zip code. Two winners are chosen by Lisle Lions Club's Scholarship Committee from the applications submitted. A rating sheet is used for each applicant that includes the areas of academics, leadership potential, community participation and financial need.

The two students who won the $500 scholarships this year will be eligible to receive another $500 each year (a total of no more than four) as long as he/she remains in good standing in college. For each of these students, this means a total scholarship of $2,000 during his/her four years of college.

Lisle Lions Club has been using this process for the past two years, starting in May 2011, bringing the total amount of funds now contributed in scholarship money to young people in our community to $3,000 each year.

Next year, providing all students who have received scholarships from our club take advantage of this process, we will be up to an expenditure of $4,000 per year.

We feel that it is money well spent.

Sandy Williams, Lisle Lions Club Secretary
