Hinsdale South's 2013 spring sports highlight reel
Baseball conference title, softball regional title top list of spring's memorable moments
The spring sports season saw a slew of memorable moments for Hinsdale South athletes. Here are some of the biggest highlights for the Hornets.
16-2: Hornets' West Suburban Gold record this spring. They swept their opponents in five of six WSG series.
Highlight: Winning a conference title in any sport is never easy, and defending a conference title is even harder. Yet that's precisely what Hinsdale South's baseball team did this spring. With conference pitchers Mike Rizzo, Mike Marrera and Matt Reschke leading the way, the Hornets defended the West Suburban Gold title they won last spring by scoring 10 or more runs in seven of their 16 wins in the conference.

Highlight: It wasn't a great start to the season for the Hornets, who got out to an 0-5 start and were 3-8 after falling to Downers Grove South in mid-April. But that rocky start was long forgotten by the time the postseason rolled around. After falling to Lyons Township late in the season, the Hornets turned around and outlasted the Lions 5-3 in nine innings in a regional semifinal game, then went on to win a regional title with a 2-1 victory over Mother McAuley.

7: Number of games the Hornets won via shutout this season, including 5-0 in a regional semifinal game.
Highlight: South made up for a streaky season (a three-game losing streak preceded a three-game winning streak midway through the year) with its play in the postseason. Kelly Flemm's opening goal sparked South to a shutout win over Chicago U-High in the playoff opener, and it rode that momentum to a 7-1 victory over host Nazareth in the regional championship game. Five different players (Brenda Maugeri three times, Kerry Just, Jessica Koziol, Sarah Puz and Julie Vezzani) scored and Flemm had three assists against Nazareth in a victory that ensured a winning record. South finished the year 11-10 after a defeat in the sectional semifinal.

1: Number of dual meets the Hornets lost this year, a 12-3 decision to fellow state heavyweight Fremd early in the season.
Highlight: The Hornets won the West Suburban Gold regular season title, the conference tournament title, and the sectional tournament title, but they saved the best for last. Senior Emma Adcock won her first five matches at the state tournament (four in just two games) on her way to a state runner-up finish. The doubles team of Sara Devine and Emily Spencer also won five times at state for a top-16 finish. Diana Joseph and the tandem of Angela Tsarouhis and Cindy Stella also qualified for state, and as a team, South finished seventh in the state.
BOYS TRACK & FIELD
2:12.56: Tavaris Binion's combined time in eight sprint races at the state meet, including prelims and finals of the 100- and 200-meter dashes in 2012 and 2013.
Highlight: Battling through an infected and ingrown toenail on his left foot, defending 100-meter state champion (and the 2012 fifth-place finisher in the 200) Tavaris Binion didn't quite reach the same heights this spring but earned two more all-state finishes. He took fifth in the 100 (11.05 seconds) and then placed ninth in the 200 (22.83) to become the Hornets' first track athlete to earn four state medals in track and field.
