ELMHURST – As part of a yearlong grant, Elmhurst police will have extra officers on patrol for the week of July 4.

Beginning tomorrow, extra officers will be looking for impaired drivers and seatbelt violations. The grant provided by the Illinois Department of Transportation provides for additional patrols throughout the holiday period. According to a press release, Elmhurst police will place emphasis on the hours between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m., which are considered the most dangerous times on Illinois roadways due to an increase in drunk driving.

The campaign will last through July 7. Motorists are encouraged to make alternate driving arrangements if they plan on drinking, and people who suspect an intoxicated driver should contact police.
