LOMBARD – At the June 20 Board of Trustees meeting, 8-year-old Julia Pate was awarded the village's Medal of Character Excellence for displaying strong character and a commitment to volunteering. Julia serves with an organization called First Things First, which provides baby supplies to families in need.

Julia received the medal from Trustee Dan Whittington (District 1) who serves as chairman of the board's Community Relations Committee.

Earlier this year, she helped organize a fundraiser for First Things First at the Walgreen's store at St. Charles Road and Elizabeth Street. She made posters, distributed fliers and encouraged shoppers to make donations to the organization.

She worked with her mother, Heather Pate, and collected three shopping carts of baby supplies and another $72 in cash for the organization.

"We were really overwhelmed by the amount of generosity from people," Heather Pate said. "I did not know what to expect. That was the most exciting part. Every single person that walked in that door – old, young – walked out and gave us something."

Julia was nominated for the award by Sandra Hill, outreach coordinator for the First Church of Lombard.

The Medal of Character Excellence is an award given by the village to local youth who serve the community and display good character.

Nominations are reviewed as needed by the Community Relations Committee and applications are available on the village's website.
