Frozen yogurt free-for-all set for La Grange with opening of Forever Yogurt, Orange Leaf

LA GRANGE – Frozen yogurt fans in La Grange will soon have a full-blown marketplace of options within a few hundred feet.

Chicago-based Forever Yogurt will open a location at 71 S. La Grange Road in the next few weeks, giving downtown La Grange three froyo options, along with Red Mango and soon-to-open Orange Leaf.

“La Grange is one of those locations that stood out to us, not only because it’s a popular suburb, but it’s one of those suburbs that has some history and is well established,” said Ahmad Yilmaz, Forever Yogurt’s creative director.

The first 50 customers to line up for the store’s opening – the exact opening date hasn’t been set – will win free frozen yogurt for a year (which means one free cup of frozen yogurt a week, valued at about $5). The next 50 in line will get free frozen yogurt on opening day.

Each Forever Yogurt is designed for its location. The La Grange store will feature murals of iconic landmarks, like the State Bank clock, Stone Avenue station, Village Hall, First Congregational Church and some of the village’s historic homes, Yilmaz said.

“Everything is cookie-cutter when it comes to franchising, so we’re trying to do everything to separate us from that mode,” he said.

The first Forever Yogurt opened in June 2010 in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. Although the company thought it would stay within the city, it now has several suburban locations that are doing well.

“The downtown settings in the suburbs are performing equally if not better than our city locations,” Yilmaz said.

The La Grange location will have 10 frozen yogurt machines, two more than most Forever Yogurt stores, and will feature 20 flavors, including the most popular, Mom’s Cake Batter.

“It’s crazy to call it frozen yogurt,” Yilmaz said. “It really does taste like the cake batter our moms had on the kitchen counter.”

Frozen yogurt has been a trendy treat for several years, and it’s not the first time Forever Yogurt has opened a new location with a competitor nearby.

“It’s something that we’re used to,” Yilmaz said. “People like to try different options. They get to try out all these types of flavors.”
