Keepataw Days fundraising off to good start with Family Fun Fest

LEMONT – Organizers of the Family Fun Fest in Lemont said the event was moderately successful, though a storm cut the last day short.

The event, held June 21 to 23 on the grounds of Lemont Township, 16300 Alba St., was a new fundraising effort for the annual Keepataw Days festival and parade, which is held Labor Day weekend.

Keepataw Days Vice President Wendy Peebles said she will not know how much money they made from the weekend until they get the bill from the Lemont Police Department for security services. But by her estimate, she thought they "did OK."

"We didn't lose any money," she said.

Peebles said some attendees expressed interest in joining the Keepataw Days committee.

The next fundraising step is a sponsorship letter drive, she said.

Keepataw Days President Mike Carey said he would have liked to see even more people at the event but that those who attended seemed to enjoy it.

"They liked the set up. They liked the location," he said.

Lemont Township Facilities Director Kathy Henrikson said the event was a success from the township's perspective because it drew awareness to the Community Center and township programs.

Henrikson said Sunday could have been the best-attended day, but approaching storms affected the turnout.

Carey said the biggest thing event organizers need to do if they want to repeat the event next year is to publicize the event better.

Henrikson agreed and said the festival may also have been hindered by other events going on during the weekend

"I think we can work together to do a better job to coordinate," Henrikson said, of avoiding competition with other events in the future.
