Spencer Mahoney (Lyons Township, La Grange Park) followed up his standout freshman season at Valparaiso, which included Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors and a first-team selection in the Horizon League, with a .271 batting average with 19 RBIs and 38 runs scored.
Mahoney didn’t have the same success as he did a year ago, but the Crusaders won the Horizon League tournament and knocked out Florida in the NCAA Tournament. Mahoney was named to the all-Indiana Regional team after going 5-for-12 with his first career home run and four runs scored in three games.
Penn sophomore Connor Cuff (Lyons Township, Western Springs) worked his way into the starting rotation and made nine starts this season. Cuff had a 5-3 record with a 4.38 ERA and led the team with 43 strikeouts.
Steve Heilenbach (Lyons Township, Western Springs), an Illinois State freshman, only made nine appearances and one start for the Redbirds, but was effective when he saw action. Heilenbach posted a 0.52 ERA in 17-1/3 innings. Teammate Brian Rodemoyer (Lyons Township, Western Springs) saw just 14 at-bats and earned one hit.
Anthony Andres (St. Rita, Western Springs) had a 3.86 ERA in 30-1/3 innings out of the bullpen for Northern Illinois. The junior was second on the team with 25 appearances. Andres’ battery mate, Joe Battaglia (St. Joseph, Westchester), made 22 starts and hit .235 in 85 at-bats for the Huskies. Battaglia, a junior, shared the team lead with three home runs.
Miami (Ohio) sophomore Ryan Powers (Nazareth, La Grange) made 20 appearances for the Redhawks. He started one game on the mound and posted a 4.54 ERA in 33-2/3 innings. Teammate Ryan Marske (Nazareth, La Grange) redshirted.
Steve DalPorto (Nazareth, La Grange) finished his Baylor career with a .242 batting average in 49 games, 34 starts. During his four years with the Bears, DalPorto hit .241 in 344 career at-bats.
Stephen Scatassa (St. Joseph, Westchester) made seven starts for St. Mary’s (Minn.) and was 6-for-19 at the plate. Scatassa had a 5.71 ERA in 34-2/3 innings.
Ryan Fejt (St. Joseph, Westchester) had a solid season for Waubonsee Community College. The freshman hurler had a 5-2 record with a 3.47 ERA, 31 strikeouts and just 10 walks in 59-2/3 innings.
Aurora University freshman Lauren Huebner (Lyons Township, Countryside) was an all-freshman pick in the Northern Athletic Conference. Huebner hit .362 with 11 RBIs, 30 runs and 15 stolen bases in 45 starts to help the Spartans go 39-8 and win the NAC title.
Koziol sees two-way action at St. Ambrose
Alyssa Koziol (Lyons Township, Willow Springs) had a strong freshman season for St. Ambrose softball. Koziol had a 7-3 record with a 3.80 ERA in 59 innings. She was third on the team in innings and wins and also earned 14 plate appearances with four hits.
