DuPage to launch West Nile virus alert system

Published: Friday, June 21, 2013 12:52 p.m. CST

DuPage County residents will soon have another source of information as they try to prevent exposure to the West Nile virus, according to a news release.

The County Health Department and County Board have partnered to create a Personal Protection Index to inform residents about the amount of West Nile virus in the county, according to the release. The index is planned to go live during the DuPage County Board meeting June 25.

County Board Public Information Specialist Johnna Kelly likened the PPI to air quality indexes or the federal government's terror threat index. It will be updated on a weekly basis and based off of the Health Department's review of human and mosquito surveillance data.

The county will also highlight points of safety and defense against the virus to help ensure a safe summer for residents.
