DOWNERS GROVE – A Downers Grove woman is suing the Lombard Mexican restaurant that may be responsible for an E. coli breakout this month.
Seattle-based law firm Marler Clark, which specializes in representing victims of foodborne illness, filed the suit Thursday in the DuPage County Circuit Court on behalf of the Downers Grove resident, Elizabeth Bernardi.
Bernardi and as many as 20 others fell ill with the E. coli bacteria after eating food from the restaurant Los Burritos earlier this month.
According to the complaint, Bernardi ate at the business on June 6 and came down with a gastrointestinal illness three days later. Bernardi alleges that on June 11, she sought medical treatment for bloody diarrhea, severe abdominal cramps and vomiting, according to a newsrelease from the lawfirm.
Despite returning home from the doctor’s office, she claims she awoke in great pain and distress and was rushed to the emergency department at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove on June 12. She was allegedly hospitalized for five days due to the infection and continues to receive medical care as a result of her illness, according to the release.
“The symptoms were beyond severe and just would not stop, continuing to get worse until I could not get up off my bathroom floor,” Bernardi said in a statement.
She is seeking compensation in excess of $50,000.
