York's 2013 spring sports highlight reel

Dukes capture first softball state trophy

As usual, York had a number of competitive teams throughout the spring. Here are some of the best moments from the Dukes' spring sports season.

1: Number of state trophies for York after placing fourth this spring.

Highlight: The Dukes made state for just the second time and went deeper in the playoffs than any other York team. York's fourth-place finish was a surprise to everyone involved and took some late inning magic – the Dukes were down to their last out in both the regional and sectional finals. Senior Gracie Sullivan had some clutch hits in the playoffs but was the only senior starter. Junior DePaul-recruit Angela Scalzitti will return as captain with a talented team looking for more next year.

17: York's seed at the Pepsi Showdown before making the semifinals.

Highlight: The Dukes have been a strong girls soccer program lately but lost a lot of talent from a year ago. York proved it could still compete with the best at the Pepsi Showdown. The Dukes were the No. 17 seed in the 32-team field, but won three straight matches despite being the lower-ranked team in all three. Senior midfielder Bryce Banuelos took charge of the team and sophomore Alyssa Kovatchis picked up the scoring load lost from the previous season.

18: Top-three finishes at the West Suburban Silver meet for York

Highlight: Lyons Township won the West Suburban Silver indoor track meet, but York had the last laugh in the outdoor season. The Dukes outpaced LT 162-141 in the outdoor conference meet despite winning fewer titles. Reid Smith picked up two wins (high jump and pole vault), Nate Mroz won the 3,200-meter run and the 4x800 relay also took first. The 4x200 produced the Dukes' top result at state, finishing fourth behind Jake Sacksteder, Josh Farrar, Jeff Ostling and Emmett McCoy, all of whom are expected back next year. Reid took ninth in the high jump, and the 4x800 finished 10th.

5: Top-10 state finishes in Emma Fisher's distance running career, including three this year.

Highlight: Emma Fisher finished her standout York career with two top 10s at the Class 3A state meet. Fisher was third in the 3,200-meter run and sixth in the 1,600. Throw that onto her runner-up finish at the cross country meet in the fall and Fisher had a memorable senior year. The future Stanford Cardinal qualified for state events eight times in her career. The 4x200 relay team of Emily Simo, Marissa Sparks, Josephine Jelinek and Shante Dansby took seventh at state.

8.5: Team points the Dukes scored at the state tournament.

Highlight: York had a wildly successful season that included five invite wins, a sectional title and a top-10 finish at state. The Dukes qualified the maximum number of state entrants and tied for eighth in the team standings. All six state qualifiers – Georgia Schneider, Julia Carlson, Lauren Liang, Karen Altergott, Cori D'Onofrio and Natalie Rizzo – were seniors.

9.1: Sam Bode's score on vault at the state meet for sixth place.

Highlight: Sophomore Sam Bode was York's top gymnast this spring and made two event finals at state. Bode was sixth on vault and ninth on floor exercise. He also qualified for state in the all-around, parallel bars and horizontal bar. John DiCianni and Bryce Simpson also qualified for state.
