Willowbrook, AT, Montini 2013 spring sports highlight reel
Willowbrook had one of its better springs in recent memory while Montini and Addison Trail also had some memorable moments. Here are the best spring sports accomplishments from those three schools.
WILLOWBROOK BOYS TRACK
7: Years since a Willowbrook boys track and field athlete won a state event prior to this spring.
Highlight: Junior Matt Burns used to dread running the 400-meter dash, but it's safe to say he's changed his view on it now. The Willowbrook junior ran through wet conditions to win the 400 at the Class 3A final. The Lombard resident qualified with the third fastest time in the prelims, 48.73 seconds, after entering the meet seeded seventh. He won by nearly four-tenths of a second.
2007: Last year Montini won a conference title prior to this spring.
Highlight: The Broncos got a late start to the season thanks to the bad spring weather, but quickly made up for lost time. Montini got off to a hot start in the Suburban Christian Blue and never looked back. The Broncos won the league title and finished with a 21-9 record. Senior two-way player Ben Dobosenski was named player of the year in the conference.
.309: Team batting average for the Warriors this spring.
Highlight: Willowbrook had a solid core of returners and recovered from a slow start to win 22 games and take third in the West Suburban Gold. Ace pitcher Dave Cericola had another dominant season (1.17 ERA) and Cal Moltzan, Brian Johnson and Dom Battaglia keyed a deep lineup.
9: Home runs hit by sophomore Sam Schmidt.
Highlight: Willowbrook slumped early in the season, but got warm with the weather and finished with a 23-9 record. The Warriors were second in the West Suburban Gold. Senior Darian Pelsor had more than 200 strikeouts on the mound and sophomores Sam Schmidt and Alyssa Ressinger were key parts of the offense.
27: Wins for Montini this spring, a new school record.
Highlight: The Broncos had one of the best seasons in program history, even setting a new record for wins in a season, and the scary part is that Montini had a young roster. Five freshmen and four sophomores contributed to the 27-win season. The Broncos earned the top seed in a Class 3A sectional, but were upset in the semifinal.
MONTINI GIRLS TRACK
9:30.62: Time for the Montini 4x800-meter relay at the Class 2A state meet.
Highlight: Montini's 4x800-meter relay took second at the Class 2A state meet. Brittany Fisher, Maddy Jamrozek, Catherine Kitz and Theresa Connelly finished behind Lakes at the meet.
MONTINI GIRLS LACROSSE
39: Wins during the last three seasons for Montini.
Highlight: Montini slowly had been building up its girls lacrosse program, and this season the hard work showed results. The Broncos made the state final, upsetting state power New Trier in the semifinals, for the first time ever. Francesa LoVerde and Fran Meyer were first-team all-state selections.
ADDISON TRAIL SOFTBALL
9: Win improvement for Addison Trail softball this season vs. last season.
Highlight: The Blazers stlll have a ways to go to start contending for conference and regional titles, but this season showed significant progress. A year after winning just two games, AT won 11 and had some quality wins along the way. Sophomore Ari Renc, who hit .420 and was an all-conference pick in the West Suburban Gold, will lead the charge for a similar improvement next spring.
WILLOWBROOK BOYS VOLLEYBALL
6-1: Willowbrook's West Suburban Gold record, second only to state champion Downers Grove South.
Highlight: The Warriors had high hopes from the start of the season thanks to a senior-heavy squad. An early season sweep against rival Glenbard East set the tone for what turned into a 26-win season. Kyle Dewyer, Austin Kirchner and Zac Prosek were among the seniors leading Willowbrook.
WILLOWBROOK GIRLS TRACK
2:18.63: Molly Krawczykowski's time in the 800-meter run at the Class 3A state meet.
Highlight: Willowbrook junior Molly Krawczykowski cracked the top 10 at the Class 3A state meet in the 800-meter run. Krawczykowski was Willowbrook's top finisher at state. Taylor Burton was 18th in the 400 and Molly's older sister Colleen qualified in the long jump and the 300-meter hurdles.
