Village council renews membership in DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference

DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Village Council voted Tuesday night to renew its membership in the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference for 2013 and 2014.

Five council members voted for the renewal – Mayor Martin Tully and commissioners Patrick Durkin, Bob Barnett, David Olsen and Greg Hose. Two voted against it – commissioners Geoff Neustadt and Becky Rheintgen.

Last week, Rheintgen expressed doubts regarding the benefits the municipality received for the cost of membership.

Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully is currently vice president of the group, which lobbies state legislators on behalf of DuPage County municipalities.

Membership is $36,776.40 for the year.

The measure was approved after an amendment, proposed by Barnett, that directs the council to review a list of goals and benchmarks next year before it decides whether or not to approve the membership again.

Tully championed lobbying collectively in Springfield, which he said has more pull than if the village were to lobby on its own.

"Collaboration and cooperation with other municipalities and other taxing bodies is without a doubt an absolute necessity, beyond question," he said.

At the meeting, the council tabled discussion on updates to the pedestrian and bicycle plans.
