Downtown Lombard to host Blackhawks watch party

LOMBARD – People looking for a way to cheer on the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals can gather in downtown Lombard Wednesday night for an outdoor viewing of the game.

The party will begin at 6 p.m. and the Hawks face off against the Boston Bruins at 7 p.m.

South Park Avenue, between St. Charles Road and Michael McGuire Drive, will be closed to vehicle traffic beginning at 4 p.m. and the game will be projected on a large, outdoor movie screen.

This watch party is similar to the one that was held in downtown Lombard in January for the BCS Championship game between Notre Dame and Alabama. Despite the wintry temperatures, about 75 people came out for the event, which was intended to be a template for other special outdoor events and watch parties.

Downtown businesses, such as Shannon's Deli, Cafe 101 and The Corner House, will be open and selling food to participants. Shannon's Deli and Punky's Irish Pub also will serve alcoholic drinks.

On June 6, the Lombard Board of Trustees approved an ordinance that allows for the sale and consumption of alcohol from Shannon's and Punky's within the designated viewing area. All outside drinks are prohibited.

"No coolers, cans or bottles will be permitted outdoors," said Walter Smith, president of the Lombard Town Centre, the organization sponsoring the event. "We want to make it clear this is not a tailgating event."

Because Park Avenue will be closed Wednesday night, customers who need to pick up from Park Avenue Cleaners can call the business at 630-627-2320 to receive curbside pick-up services.

For additional information about the event, visit the Lombard Town Centre's website at lombardtowncentre.org or visit the group on Facebook.
