OAK BROOK – Butler School District 53 heard a report on the planned utilization of iPads in kindergarten though third grade classrooms during a school board meeting this month.
The iPads would be used, for example, to introduce and reinforce phonemic awareness and to help intervene with students falling behind in kindergarten; for literacy and math skill building in grades one and two; and to create content through movie making, story books and QR codes in grade three.
Co-technology directors Barbara Rebecca and Steve Ryan presented information June 10 on how iPads are used in neighboring schools, how the devices would be selected and managed and how teachers would be trained and the program assessed.
The board favored the iPad, but wanted to upgrade to the most recent model and asked if the PTO could contribute to the purchase. Members also wanted the technology committee to provide a report on what apps and software are used both on the iPads and on PCs.
