ROSELLE – Longtime friends Shawn Li, Ben Li and Wan Cai Li traveled nearly 8,000 miles from Chong Ching, China to Roselle.
Their mission: to open a Chinese and Japanese restaurant together.
The Li’s decided to partner with Chicago resident and restaurateur, Ed Culleeney, to bring traditional flavors with a contemporary twist to suburban Illinois.
On June 18, the Li’s and Culleeney, known as “Ed and the 3 Li’s,” opened 8,000 Miles restaurant on Main Street in Roselle.
8,000 Miles offers lunch and dinner with rotating chalkboard chef’s specials. The dinner menu consists of Chinese and Japanese small plates such as nori wrapped shrimp and crab rangoon.
Guests seeking a custom experience can explore the Sichuan-written menu with authentic dishes such as the spicy boiled beef and cumin scented lamb. The sushi menu features fresh nigiri and sashimi.
Homemade desserts such as chocolate banana wontons are served as well.
The lunch menu features a combination of rice and noodle dishes in addition to various appetizers and sushi from the dinner menu. A group share menu is available for tables of six or more. This menu includes a sampling of each category on 8,000 Miles’ menu, priced at $20 per person at dinner and $13 per person at lunch.
Two owners of 8,000 Miles, Shawn Li and Ben Li, met in China when they were just 19.
Shawn went on to open TL’s Four Seasons restaurant in downtown Bartlett and to co-own PL8 restaurant in Barrington with Ed Culleeney.
Wan Cai Li, also an owner, was a master chef at a five-star hotel in Chong Ching, before opening Double Li restaurant in Chinatown with Ben.
Culleeney was a partner of Lettuce Entertain You restaurants and a general manager at Ben Pao for 25 years. He left to become Li’s partner at PL8 in 2011, where they all came together and began planning for their newest project.
The space consists of a dining room, bar, semi-private area and outdoor patio.
8,000 Miles will support a variety of local events from the Roselle Main Street Cruise Night to the Taste of Roselle.
8,000 Miles is located at 107 Main St. in Roselle.
