DOWNERS GROVE – An off-duty police officer was in his garage in the 1500 block of Dickson Avenue around 2:40 a.m. June 9 when he allegedly witnessed two men hitting mailboxes several houses down the block.
When he identified himself as a police officer, the two men fled. One of the two men was later identified as Kevin D. Gordon, the other man was not found, according to police.
Gordon, 19, of 1320 68th Place, Downers Grove, allegedly held a wooden stake in front of the officer in a threatening manner and demanded to see the officer's badge, which the officer displayed, police said.
According to the police report, Gordon said he could not see the badge, and the officer unholstered his gun, at which point Gordon dropped the stake and continued to run.
Eventually, the officer took Gordon down to the ground and detained him until other officers arrived, police said. There were no physical strikes exchanged between the two, according to the police report. Police did not find the other suspect, described as a white male wearing a Blackhawks cap and jersey.
Gordon was charged with assault, criminal damage to property and underage consumption of alcohol, police said.
One resident's mailbox was allegedly torn off by Gordon and the unknown suspect, causing about $200 in damage. Two other broken mailboxes were also found by police, they said.
