Los Burritos Mexicanos temporarily closed after E. coli investigation

Published: Monday, June 17, 2013 3:30 p.m. CDT

LOMBARD – Los Burritos Mexicanos restaurant, 1015 E. St. Charles Road, is currently closed as the DuPage County Health Department investigates a "cluster of gastrointestinal illnesses" that were reported by customers of the restaurant, according to a statement from the health department.

The business was closed after four cases of E. coli were confirmed in people who ate at the restaurant. Two of the victims were treated at the hospital and discharged; the other two cases did not require hospitalization.

Officials from the DuPage County Health Department are working with restaurant owners, the Illinois Department of Public Health and local healthcare professionals to prevent and control further spread of the disease.

Common symptoms of E. coli include severe, often bloody, diarrhea and painful abdominal cramps. Most healthy adults are able to recover within about a week, but E. coli can cause serious disease, such as kidney failure, in some people.

The disease is present in the stools of infected people and can be passed between people who do not wash their hands properly or practice good hygiene.

Anyone who ate at Los Burritos in Lombard between May 24 and June 14 and developed diarrhea between two and 10 days after visiting the restaurant is asked to contact a doctor and to report the illness to the DuPage County Health Department by calling 630-221-7040.
