Lightning strike likely sparked fire that destroyed Lemont home

LEMONT – A Lemont home burned to the ground Wednesday evening in a fire suspected to have been started by a lightning strike.

The fire occurred at approximately 6 p.m. at 16453 Alba, according to Lemont Fire Protection District Chief Carl Churulo.

Although the family was home at the time of the fire, all residents were evacuated without injury.

Churulo said the fire started on the second floor, which was fully engulfed by the blaze by the time firefighters arrived at the scene.

He said the number of lightning strikes in the area at the time suggested lightning was the cause, but could not confirm this theory because the extent of the damage may have destroyed other potential causes.

Churulo said resident Melanie Dennis told first responders that the house shook when she called in the fire.

Dennis had rented the home five weeks ago and just moved her belongings into the house last weekend, according to Churulo.

Churulo described the house as being in the middle of a field, down a dirt and rocky road that is only wide enough for one vehicle to get down the road at a time. With the amount of rain, the road was nearly impassable in spots.

Because there are no fire hydrants in the area surrounding the home, first responders transported water tanks to the scene to combat the flames.

Approximately 10 nearby districts and departments assisted Lemont in fighting the fire.
