Letter: Downers Grove reader questions trust in government

To the Editor:

My family is not a politicized family and government policy rarely is commented upon.

We trust that while political parties debate the issues, government entities - like the IRS - operate according to their mandate and follow the laws of this country.

Recent news makes me wonder. Can these government agencies really be trusted to execute their jobs fairly? The leaders of the IRS initially lied to the House Ways & Means Committee then later admitted to discriminating practices.

When pressed by Congress, former Commissioner Miller stated they did nothing illegal. Lois Lerner, responsible for the IRS’s tax exempt groups, has pleaded the 5th amendment and will not face congressional investigators.

Today, I feel a strong lack of trust in our government, a feeling that is increasingly bipartisan.

Today I take a stand against this behavior by sending my comments and questions to my Congressman, Peter Roskam. I know that he is in the middle of this IRS investigation as a member of the House Ways & Means Committee.

His pressing questions get to the heart of the issue: transparency, incompetency, corruption and its effect on Americans.

It’s possible I have found what I was looking for: someone I trust. Thanks for working on behalf of the taxpayer, Peter.

William Maurer, Downers Grove
