First BUZZapalooza raises $3,000 to help area homeless

LA GRANGE – The first ever BUZZapalooza brought in about $3,000 to benefit BEDS Plus, which provides shelter and assistance for people who are homeless.

The event was a variation of Buzz for BEDS, an annual fundraiser at La Grange Highlands Middle School where students have their heads shaved while raising money for the organization.

Tom Hinshaw started the event several years ago. This year, he wanted to expand it to the community, so he started BUZZapalooza, which took place June 9 in Denning Park.

Twelve adults and kids either had their heads shaved or received hair extensions while donating to the cause. The event also included music played by a DJ and food.

Through the two head-shaving events and a basketball fundraiser, Hinshaw will be able to send more than $12,000 to BEDS Plus this year.

"I appreciate everybody who supported it," Hinshaw said. "I want to get that message out."

Next year, Hinshaw said he would like to get a high school sports team or coach involved.
