Riverside police carry out campaign to enforce DUI and seat belt laws

RIVERSIDE – Members of the Riverside Police Department joined other law enforcement agencies throughout the state in conducting a campaign from May 10 through Memorial Day to ensure DUI and seat belt laws were being followed.

The program featured high-visibility enforcement combined with other outreach activities, a strategic media campaign and additional enforcement activities.

Riverside officers made eight arrests for DUI, one drug arrest and a felony arrest during the campaign, the department reported. They also issued 56 citations for speeding, 30 citations for seat belt violations, 26 citations for driving an uninsured car and made 10 arrests for driving on a suspended or revoked driver's license.

Officers gave particular attention to drivers from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. when statistics show the highest incidence of drunken driving and failure to buckle up while in cars. The campaign was called "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over/Click it or Ticket."

The campaign was funded by a federal traffic safety grant through the Illinois Department of Transportation's Division of Traffic Safety.
