D-41 reinstates 'Wallflower,' revises independent reading procedures
GLEN ELLYN – Hadley Junior High School eighth graders will again have the choice to read "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" as part of the school's independent reading program.
After the previous District 41 Board of Education voted in April to remove the book by Stephen Chbosky from Hadley classrooms due to its mature content, current board members voted to reinstate the book as an option for independent reading and revise the program procedures, focusing on giving parents a say in what their children read.
"Giving the parent the ability to do this solves both issues," board Secretary Dean Elger said. "It allows them to decide for their child what the reading will be, but not for everyone's child."
