Bloomingdale Park District announces Festival of Lights

BLOOMINGDALE – In the summer heat, it’s hard to picture snow-covered hilltops and holiday lights. But the Bloomingdale Park District has already turned their sights toward the winter season.

The park district recently announced it is partnering with the village of Bloomingdale on a new holiday tradition to spark a sense of pride in Bloomingdale. They hope this new tradition will attract visitors from surrounding towns and, in turn, benefit local businesses.

Starting Nov. 29, the Festival of Lights will adorn Old Town Bloomingdale through New Year’s Eve. Pedestrians and motorists can walk or ride among a sparkling display of holiday lights and sights. The Park District will conduct on-site programming and entertainment throughout the festival.

A Tree and Park Lighting Ceremony will be held on Dec. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. Parents and children can decorate their own ornaments to decorate the tree prior to the lighting ceremony. Carolers from local groups such as Lake Park High School, churches and scouts will also be in attendance.

The Bloomingdale Park District Museum will extend its hours to include Saturday and Sunday evenings, Dec. 1 to 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. in order to promote its holiday features. Throughout the season, the museum will house a special holiday exhibit, offer hot chocolate and cookies during all open exhibit hours and hold a Christmas Card Design Workshop during all open exhibit hours.

During the Saturdays in December (Dec. 7, 14, 21) at 6 to 8 p.m., many different activities will be available to help get residents in the holiday spirit. Participants can take horse drawn carriage rides and meet some of Santa’s traveling companions, live reindeer.

On Sundays in December, Mrs. Clause will hold storytime for all of the good boys and girls. Holiday scavenger hunts will provide fun for all ages and snow angel contests will be judged with the weather permitting.

Santa will also be visiting the museum to hear what the children want for Christmas.
