Police reports: Berwyn and Cicero for June 19

Bicyclist struck by vehicle

A Berwyn man was injured when the bicycle he was riding was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Cuyler Avenue and 37th Street at 7 a.m. June 10.

Enrique S. Quintero, 41, of the 3400 block of South Cuyler Avenue, was struck as he was traveling south on Cuyler Avenue by a vehicle driven by Blanca Reyes, 30, of the 3700 block of South Ridgeland Avenue.

Quintero was taken to MacNeal Hospital where his injuries were determined not to be life-threatening.

Reyes was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, failure to exercise caution and a misdemeanor driving violation.

Man robbed of his tennis shoes

A 20-year-old Berwyn man was robbed of his Nike Air Jordan Concord shoes by three men in an alley of the 2200 block of South Grove Avenue at 6 a.m June 9.

The victim said he was walking down the alley looking for a friends house when he was approached by the three who then began beating him, then took his shoes valued at $375 and fled.

Berwyn man faces public intoxication charges

A Berwyn man was charged with public intoxication after he refused to leave a park on orders of police at 9:47 a.m. June 11.

Police were called to a park at Kenilworth Avenue and Vacin Fairway by a witness that two men sitting at a park table were intoxicated and causing trouble. Police approached Luis Sanchez, 57, of the 2100 block of South Kenilworth Avenue, and another man and smelled the odor of alcohol. Both men appeared intoxicated. The man sitting with Sanchez told police he was going home but Sanchez refused to leave and became loud and disorderly.

Car windows broken

The front and rear windshields were reported broken in a car parked in the 6400 block of West 33rd Street at 2:33 p.m. June 11.

Two bricks were found in the back seat of the vehicle. The vehicle owner also reported having an ongoing dispute with a neighbor over parking and this was the third incident of criminal damage to property she reported.

Berwyn men charged after fight with bouncer

Two Berwyn men were charged following a fight with a security guard after they were ordered to leave a bar at 3 a.m. June 9.

Jose J. Betancourt, 20, and Gonzalo Betancourt, 25, both of the 1800 block of 61st Street, were asked to leave My Cousin Vinny’s Bar, 6510 16th St., at closing time and refused. A security guard approached the two men, who then started fighting with the guard.

Jose Betancourt was charged with battery, disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property. Gonzalo Betancourt was charged with battery and disorderly conduct.

Car burglary suspect nabbed by police

A 25-year-old Berwyn man was charged with two counts of burglary and disorderly conduct after witnesses reported seeing him burglarizing a vehicle in the 6700 block of West 25th Street at 11:48 p.m. June 8.

Jose M. Bautista, of the 1600 block of South Euclid Avenue, was seen by responding officers standing next to a vehicle near 12th Street and Oak Park Avenue.

Bautista fled but was apprehended and identified by the witness as the man he saw in a vehicle in the 2500 block of Euclid Avenue.

Unlawful use of a weapon charged

A domestic dispute led to charges of unlawful use of a weapon at 10:24 p.m. June 7.

Police asked Raymond Silva, of the 5000 block of West 31st street, to exit a home on the 6900 block of West 34th Street, for questioning.

As he was being questioned, Silva pulled a loaded handgun from his pocket and told police he wanted them to know he had it on his person and that he had a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card.

He was taken into custody and charged.

DUI charges filed after hit-and-run accident

A Berwyn man faces multiple charges, including driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, after he fled the scene of a hit-and-run accident at 11:30 pm. June 6.

Oscar Lazaro, 28, of the 1600 block of South Wisconsin Avenue, was identified as the driver of the vehicle that struck two other vehicles in the McDonald’s restaurant drive-thru lane at 7135 W. Roosevelt Road.

Police detected an odor of alcohol on his breath and reported that he failed field sobriety tests.

Lazaro told police he had taken several prescription pills earlier in the evening. An open beer was found in the vehicle.

He also was charged with having open alcohol, no insurance, failure to provide information after a property damage accident, leaving the scene of an accident, driving while under the influence of drugs, improper lane usage and vehicle operated without registration plate cover.

Burglaries and thefts

• Car stereo component were reported stolen from a vehicle parked in the 2500 block of South Grove Avenue at 11:25 a.m. June 9. It is believed the doors of the vehicle were unlocked at the time.

• A wallet was reported stolen from a vehicle parked in the 6900 block of Cermak Road at 9:38 p.m. June 9. The vehicle was unlocked at the time.

• An air compressor, generator, power washer and bicycle were reported stolen from a garage in the 1200 block of South Gunderson Avenue at 10:39 a.m. June 8. A service door was found forced open.

Man robbed; shots fired

Officers responded to a call of shots fired and were met by a man who reported he had been robbed at gunpoint by two men in the 1900 block of South 50th Court at 2:27 a.m. June 10.

After parking in his garage, the victim was approached by the two men who demanded his belongings. After surrendering his property, the victim began to fight with the offenders and they wound up in his yard where one of the men pulled out a handgun and fired several shots into the ground.

The subjects then entered his garage and his vehicle and took his car radio.

Video shows burglary in progress

A man wearing a hoodie drawn over his face burglarized a food mart at 2:30 a.m. June 11.

Security video showed the man forced open the rear door of Los Compadres Food Mart, 2230 S. Central Ave., and removed $150 in cash from the cash register. He also attempted to break into the ATM.

Burglary suspect nabbed with tools in hand

Officers responding to a burglary in progress charged a Cicero man with burglary at 6 a.m. June 10.

Omar DeJesus Cervantez, 19, was found inside Delangel Beauty Salon, 5834 W. Cermak Road, in possession of the tools he used to enter the business.

Man asleep at the wheel charged with DUI

A Berwyn man found asleep at the wheel and blocking traffic was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol at 2:42 a.m. June 8.

Celso G. Hernandez, 45, tried numerous times to put the vehicle in gear and drive away after being woken up by police. Officers made other observations of impairment and conducted a DUI investigation that led to Hernandez being charged.

Man slumped in seat, charged with DUI

Officers responded to a running vehicle with the driver slumped over in the seat and the motor running in front of a grocery store in the 3000 block of South Cicero Avenue at 4 a.m. June 8.

Eugenio Flores, 24, of Chicago, was found slumped over on the front seat with two open bottles of alcoholic beverage next to him on the seat.

Flores was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood-alcohol level of .182.

Chicago man charged with DUI

A Chicago man was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs after he was observed driving with improper lighting at 3 a.m. June 8.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle driven by Daniel M. Luna, 43, of Chicago, when it crossed over the centerline into oncoming traffic.

Luna was stopped in the 4700 block of 16th Street where officers detected drinking along with evidence of drug when white powder was found under Luna’s nose and on his hands. Luna admitted to using cocaine.

Burglaries and thefts

• A radiator was reported stolen from the vestibule of an apartment building in the5000 block of West 18th Street June 11.

• A lawn mower was reported stolen from a garage in the 3400 block of South 59th Avenue at 7:30 p.m. June 11. Entry was gained through an unlocked overhead door.

• An iPod and debit and credit cards were reported stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the 1500 block of South 59th Court at 7:45 a.m. June 12.

• A wallet containing $175 in cash and miscellaneous identification cards was reported stolen from a vehicle in the 1800 block of South 57th Avenue at 2 a.m. June 7. The driver’s door lock had been removed.

• Several power tools were reported stolen from a vehicle in the 3200 block of South 48th Court at 9 a.m June 10.

• A Pioneer amp, speakers, 20 quarts of oil and a set of black and gray seat covers were reported stolen from a garage in the 5500 block of West 24th Street at 7 a.m. June 8. Unknown how entry was gained.
