CICERO – Three men masquerading as lawn care workers were seen stealing an outside central air conditioning unit at 11:30 a.m. June 4, police reported.

A witness saw two men cutting a lawn in the 3400 block of South 59th Court while another man stayed in a pick up truck in front of the residence. The witness was suspicious because the mowers were doing such a fast and sloppy job. He then heard the man waiting in the truck say "that's enough" at which time he drove his truck to the alley. He then exited and walked up to the air conditioning unit, cut the cables and then he and one of the other men put it in back of the truck, along with the two mowers and drove off.

The residence is in foreclosure and is maintained by an unknown contractor. Detectives attempted to go through all the layers of responsibility, but found no one knows who is actually responsible for the property, or the persons hired to maintain it. Police said thefts like these are becoming a common occurrence with vacant properties in the town, especially with foreclosures. Many times the actual owner of the property is a corporation outside of the U.S.

While police often apprehend the thieves, they are unable to prosecute because no one can be found to sign complaints.
