A lot of people assume their library gets a little sleepy during the summer. While that might be true elsewhere, that is certainly not the case at Addison Public Library; we’re busier than ever!
People love to read during the summer. To many, reading a book by the pool or the beach is as much a part of summer as grilling burgers in the backyard or going to a baseball game.
Summer reading is, in fact, such a cherished pastime that in Addison, we celebrate it every year with contests and prizes for our patrons. Kids, teens and adults can stop by and pick up a reading log to record the books they’ve read or the time they’ve spent reading. Our theme this year is “Have Book, Will Travel,” but you don’t have to read a travel-themed book; any topic will do.
Children can win food, toys, books and even a shot at our grand prizes – including an iPad Mini. Kids can come in after reading five, 10, 15 and 20 hours to spin our prize wheel. They also can bring a “Flat Addi” cutout to any summer activities or vacation destinations and take a photo for a chance at more prizes.
Children who can’t read yet can count time spent reading with a parent, while teens can enter to win books, gift cards and an Arduino set. Adults can win themed gift baskets and other prizes; our grand prize is a Samsung Galaxy Tablet.
Reading is its own reward, but why not sweeten the deal for yourself? Grab an entry form or two next time you’re passing by the library. Our summer reading program continues until July 27. Our librarians would be happy to recommend material based on your interests.
If you’re going on vacation, we’ll even extend the period of most book or audiobook loans by two weeks, meaning you can keep those items checked out for six weeks. If you invite a library staff member on vacation with you, we’ll let you keep it even longer. (Just kidding.)
Summer is a great time to get outside and be active, but keep in mind there’s nothing more relaxing than laying out in the sun with a good book. See you soon!
