Local rugby players lead Bulls to third-place state trophy

LEMONT – The West Suburban Bulls high school rugby club had two teams competing in the Illinois Youth Rugby Association State championships May 27 in Lemont.

The Bulls feature players from Lyons Township, Hinsdale Central, Nazareth and Riverside Brookfield.

The varsity squad topped Elgin, 28-17, for third place in Tier 3. The Bulls came out firing and continuously overwhelmed Elgin’s defense. Captain Matt Ramsey of Nazareth ran in the first score outpacing Elgin’s defense. He then converted his own try for an early 7-0 lead.

Senior forwards Tim Delacey of LT and Peter Nelson of Central would continuously pressure Elgin with hard-charging runs requiring several defenders to bring them down. Tries would also be scored by LT’s Alex Fischer and Piers Clarke. The Bulls’ last score saw Hinsdale Central’s Cameron Page pass the ball weak side off a Bulls scrum to LT sprinter Quentin Sanchez who would outrun all Elgin’s defenders for a 60 meter score. Ramsey would convert to bringing the Bulls tally to 28.

The frosh/soph team played Brother Rice for the state title. Brother Rice was undefeated in the regular season, while the Bulls’ only loss was to Brother Rice in an earlier season match.

Brother Rice won the match, 18-14, after scoring the first 10 points of the match. Anthony Gonia and Joe Dillon, each from LT, scored both of the Bulls’ tries, while Christian Musil of Hinsdale Central converted both tries.

The team was captained this year by Ciszewski of LT. Michael Rasmussen, Mitch Ciszewski and Ethan McGahay also contributed for the Bulls.
