Westmont HS student's skills, hard work equal a big win
WESTMONT – Things are adding up for Westmont's Zackary Sedivy.
The recent Westmont High School graduate took first place in a competition of the 2013 National Leadership Conference hosted by Business Professionals of America, an organization for students pursuing careers in business management, finance, accounting and other related career fields.
Sedivy took first in the event's Microsoft Excel spreadsheet competition. To win, Sedivy created a spreadsheet, plugged in formulas and made an expanded pie graph.
The competition was held May 8 to 12 at Disney World in Orlando.
To qualify for entry into the national competition, held May 8 to 12 at Disney World in Orlando, Sedivy finished first in a state competition.
He joined the Business Professionals of America at the advice of a former teacher.
"My teacher from a long time ago said I was pretty decent when it came to accounting and asked my mom if I could join," he said.
Sedivy will attend College of DuPage beginning this fall for two years. If he maintains a 3.2 GPA he will be guaranteed admission to the University of Illinois' College of Engineering.
"I had an interest in engineering, so it worked out," Sedivy said, adding he is leaning toward a mechanical engineering major.
