CICERO – Tough times are forcing more 24th District residents into renting a home these days and as a result, residents are seeking answers.
A Tenant’s Rights Seminar to assist residents in knowing their rights when renting or leasing a home will be Thursday at the St. Agnes School Gymnasium, 2643 S. Central Ave. in Chicago.
Representatives of the Metropolitan Tenants Organization (MTO) and the Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR) will be on hand to discuss tenant’s issues, rights and options if they believe their rights are being discriminated.
State Rep. Lisa Hernandez said her office received complaints from residents of the 24th House District which includes parts of Lyons, Brookfield, Cicero, Berwyn and Chicago’s Little Village.
Hernandez said the issue of renting has been exacerbated by the tough times.
“What really is happening is with such a tremendous foreclosure problem in the area we have families who have to rent,” she said. “Their understanding of issues with a landlord, they don’t know where to even begin.”
Hernandez added statistics show the number of residents renting in the 24th District is on the rise.
“I’ve noticed more of these issues coming into the office,” she said. They gave me a reason to put the seminar together.”
Attendees will have a chance to detail their challenges and experiences to officials from MTO and IDHR to learn about their rights as tenants and receive information on Chicago’s tenant laws.
