Man arrested after allegedly tackling La Grange police officer at carnival

LA GRANGE – A La Grange man is being held on $5,000 bond at Cook County Jail after he allegedly tackled and injured a La Grange police officer during the Ahhh! La Grange Carnival on Friday night.

About 8:45 p.m., witnesses told police that Martel Aguilar, 20, of the 900 block of La Grange Road, allegedly was making lewd comments, touching women inappropriately and attempting to recruit others to fight police. Police asked Aguilar to leave, but he returned, according to police reports.

As police went to take Aguilar into custody, he attempted to flee the area and tackled an officer in the legs, police said.

Aguilar was arrested and charged with aggravated battery to an officer, two counts of resisting an officer and criminal trespassing. He was taken to Cook County Jail on Sunday, where he remains in custody.

Police said Aguilar has an extensive criminal record. On May 26, Aguilar was charged with a separate count of criminal trespassing after allegedly violating an order of protection that banned him from DiNico's Pizza.

The officer suffered a serious knee injury and was treated at a local hospital. He remains on crutches and is working on limited duty.

La Grange Police Chief Michael Holub said the officer heard a pop when his knee was struck. He declined to identify the officer.

"We're a little worried about what may be in there," Holub said. "It's very painful for him. He can't put any weight on it."
