Fenwick soccer scores best-ever 3rd-place state trophy
NAPERVILLE – A year ago, Fenwick girls soccer lost in a Class 3A regional final.
Now the Friars have a state trophy.
Fenwick took advantage of its move to Class 2A this postseason by taking third in the state. The Friars earned the highest finish in school history.
The Friars beat Payton, 4-1, in the Lewis University supersectional to advance to the state semifinal at North Central against Glenwood on Friday.
An early goal from Caroline Murphy gave Fenwick the lead but was canceled out before halftime. The Titans scored on a breakaway with less than 12 minutes remaining and went to win the title.
Senior standout Cali Pyzdrowski, a Marquette recruit, scored the only goal in the 1-0 win over Lemont for third place Saturday.
Pyzdrowski is among 13 seniors on the Friars. Providence recruit and leading scorer Bridget Hillsman, goalkeeper Jesse Cwik, all-conference defenders Elizabeth Cusick and Kelly Collins and key midfielders Lauren Frank, Maddie Stupinski and Emily McGann highlighted the senior group. Molly Wallach, Maggie Reilly, Alisa Lollino, Giana Lollino and Mimi Payne round out the seniors.
Fenwick finished the season 19-5-4, a nine-win improvement over last season, and claimed the second state trophy in program history.
