HOFFMAN ESTATES – Downers Grove South was the lowest seed entering the boys volleyball state quarterfinals Friday.

As of Saturday night, the Mustangs are the No. 1 team in Illinois.

Downers South won its final two matches in straight sets, beating Lincoln-Way North, 25-18, 25-20, in Saturday's championship match at Hoffman Estates High School.

In the final, Nick Timreck led the Mustangs at the net with 11 kills and four blocks. Mike Schmitt knocked down 10 kills, and Will Tischler added seven. Jordan Pawlicki piloted the offense with 29 assists. David DeMarco collected 14 digs.

Earlier Saturday, Downers South beat St. Charles North, 25-18, 25-21, in a semifinal. Deerfield gave the Mustangs the toughest challenge before South emerged with a 25-20, 22-25, 25-17 victory in Friday's quarterfinal.

The Mustangs began the playoffs as a No. 5 seed in the Proviso West sectional. The seven other teams to reach the state quarterfinals were either No. 1 or No. 2 seeds. South finished the season with a 31-10 record.
