Orton, Andree homers lift Downers South over Downers North for sectional title

NAPERVILLE - A pair of sixth inning home runs plated three runs and Downers Grove South's softball team topped crosstown rival Downers Grove North 3-2 in Saturday's Class 4A sectional championship game.

The Mustangs will face St. Charles East at 4:30 p.m. Monday in a Rosemont supersectional game at the Chicago Bandits stadium.

Melissa Orton had a two-out,  two-run shot an Jess Andree followed with a solo shot as the Mustangs (22-10) erased North's 1-0 lead and held on for the win. Freshman pitcher Caroline Hedgcock worked a 1-2-3 seventh to end the game.

North (26-9) plated one run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 3-2, but left three runners stranded on base at the end of the inning. The Trojans left nine runners on base in the game.

The two home runs were the second and third North pitcher Elaine Heflin allowed this season. The first came in Wednesday's sectional semifinal win over Benet.

Hannah Mrazek hit a solo home run for the Trojans. Kristen Bialek hit a bloop single before Orton's homer to start the two-out rally.
