Top seed stops York in regional final
Butler-bound Pitlock pitches gem in Dukes' regional semifinal victory
SCHAUMBURG – The regional played out in a nearly predictable way for York baseball.
The Dukes received quality starting pitching as they have for most of the season. They also knew they'd face some as well.
After beating Willowbrook 2-1 in a regional semifinal on May 23, the Dukes fell to top sectional seed Lake Park 4-0 in the final on Saturday at Schaumburg High School.
River Pitlock struck out 10 and allowed just six hits in the win over Willowbrook, which was his last start for the Dukes. The Butler recruit also had an RBI in the victory.
Pitlock out-dueled Willowbrook ace Dave Cericola, who struck out nine in a complete game. The York senior ace finished the season with a 2.69 ERA. He also had a 5-4 record with 39 strikeouts in 52 innings.
In the regional final, the Lancers unleashed all-time wins leader Christian Taugner on the Dukes. Taugner, a Brown signee, pitched a three-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts and no walks.
Luis Alcaraz was on the mound for York and his complete game couldn't match Taugner.
The Dukes ended the season at 16-20. York was never in contention to defend its West Suburban Silver title from last spring after getting swept in the opening series by Downers Grove North and finished 8-10 in the Silver.
Nine seniors will leave the program: Pitlock, Alcaraz, Pete Doughty, Adam Gomez, Keon Hackney, Josh Paparone, Nico Sanchez, Kevin Toomey and Austin Wagner. A number of juniors saw consistent playing time and will make up a fairly experienced core next year.
