Montini softball suffers power outage to end record-breaking season

ELMWOOD PARK – All season long, Montini has hit and hit for power.

Unfortunately for the Lady Broncos, it was Fenwick that showed off its power on May 28.

Montini’s season came to an end after a 6-4 loss to the Friars in the Class 3A Elmwood Park sectional semifinal. Fenwick had a home run and two RBI doubles to build an early lead that Montini could not come back from.

Montini scored in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to two but barely threatened again. After hitting 122 extra-base hits during the season, Montini hit none in the loss to Fenwick.

Despite the loss, the season was a major success for the program. Montini won its first regional since 2009 and fourth in school history, by beating Wheaton Academy, 13-1, in Saturday’s Payton regional final.

The Lady Broncos also won the Suburban Christian Conference and had a 27-11 record. The 27 wins are the most in program history.

Seniors Alex Dewey, Shaylee Lewis and Marie Kalas graduate. Lewis was one of the top hitters on the team with a .477 batting average, 40 RBIs and 36 runs scored. She also finishes her four-year career with 85 stolen bases.

Despite losing just three seniors, Montini looks to be young again next year with just two juniors, Sara Ross and Cristina Barrett, playing this year.

A pair of freshman, Isabell Alexander and Alyssa Sclafani also will be worth following. Alexander hit .513 this spring with 54 runs scored and 35 stolen bases. Sclafani hit .419 with 11 home runs.
