Eve Assisted Living working to improve quality of life

HINSDALE – The words "assisted living" can be synonymous with fear for several people. But Eve Assisted Living in Hinsdale is more like a hotel than a medical facility, with amenities including a fitness center, yoga room, home movie theater, heart-healthy menu and around-the-clock emergency response.

There's also the supernatural handrails.

"If we touch a rail, within moments, the paint eats the germs so the person coming in behind you who touches the rail won't get your germs," said Janet Simons, marketing director with Eve Assisted Living.

All employees are certified nursing assistants. At Eve, the ratio in the memory center is one CNA and/or RN to three residents. At other assisted living facilities, the ratio could be as high as one to eight, or more.

"There is nowhere in any of the suburbs that I have come into that you can have hotel, condo living in an assisted living facility," Simons said.

There are several amenities at Eve that set its high reputation, including a philosophy of aging in place. A typical nursing home will have three to four stages: Independent living, then assisted living, nursing care and from there it's hospice or memory care.

Simons said once a resident goes from assisted living to nursing care, they can no longer stay in their original unit.

"Once you pick out your apartment, you never ever have to leave because once you're here we will bring the nursing staff to you," she said. "So there is going to be no nursing home, there is going to be no hospitalization, no rehab and if you need hospice, we provide it for you."

Eve also takes advantage of what Hinsdale has to offer. Located across the street from the public library, Simons said several residents make regular trips there and visit shops in the downtown area.

Family also is important to Eve, as residents can Skype with relatives, watch movies during visits and eat dinner on the patio or inside.

On May 14, Eve had its second open house since opening in January. Another open house will be scheduled in late June.
